Curriculum Overview

We believe that all children have a right to a broad, balanced, relevant and exciting education that provides continuity and progression and takes individual differences into account. Our Curriculum comprises the total learning experience offered by the school and includes attitudes, dispositions and values as well as skills, knowledge and understanding; we believe this to be essential for the development of motivated, committed learners and well-rounded individuals: 'Learners for Life'. It is our aim to develop independent, responsible, confident and considerate members of the community.

Our thematic based curriculum draws on the 2014 National Curriculum and its Programmes of Study. We teach our curriculum creatively, understanding that all children learn in different ways. We have agreed six whole-school ‘umbrella topics’, which are: Good to be Me, Great Britain, Significant Individuals, Our Wonderful World, Communities and Creativity and Performing. Each base will undertake the same ‘umbrella’ topic at the same point during the year, enabling a clear pathway for the children during their time with us. Each base will vary the focus of the learning under each ‘umbrella topic’ so that there is progression. Subject leaders have taken the objectives from the National Curriculum and have ensured that these are covered during the appropriate key stage. The breakdown of these objectives can be seen in our curriculum maps.

It is our aim to provide a curriculum which inspires and engages children. Each topic will be introduced to the children during an immersion day where a 'hook' will be used to fire their imagination and captivate them! Children then take part in shaping their own learning experiences by asking questions that they wish to seek answers to and by considering how it would be best to learn.

It is our aim to promote a love of learning by helping children understand what makes a successful learner and to develop learning dispositions which will enable them to have a growth mindset and be successful learners in life. These are the school’s 6Rs and they are embedded in every aspect of our learning. The 6Rs encourage children to be Responsible, Resilient, Reciprocal, Resourceful, Respectful and Reflective. Focusing on the 6Rs enables children to become well-rounded individuals and develop the characteristics of effective learners. We celebrate and reward children for demonstrating these dispositions.

We offer a curriculum which is balanced and we recognise that the personal development of pupils, spiritually, morally, socially and culturally, plays a significant part in their ability to learn and achieve. Please refer to SMSC under the curriculum section of the website to understand more about how we promote and provide learning opportunities that allow children to explore these values. As a Church School we use the VALUES FOR LIFE to promote the teaching of Christian Values and these also develop our children's social, moral, spiritual and cultural knowledge and understanding.

At Verwood First School British values are integral to our school culture and embedded in our school curriculum to ensure young people leave school prepared for life in modern Britain.

We ensure that our pupils experience a range of trips and visitors, as we acknowledge that real life contexts and situations are vital in order for children to make links with the wider world in which they live. We also provide a range of exciting extra-curricular opportunities for children to extend their knowledge and understanding and to improve their skills in a range of artistic, creative and sporting activities.

We recognise the crucial role which parents play in their children's education and make every effort to encourage parental involvement in the educational process. We will communicate with parents by providing a yearly overview of your child’s learning, half termly topic webs, which outlines the learning for that topic, and a weekly blog. Copies of these will be available on our website.
