In English and Guided Reading we have continued learning about our class text ‘The Pied Piper of Hamelin’ and looking at the differences between myths and fables.

In maths we have been recapping all of our learning from the year. The children have been super resilient in retrieving all of their knowledge from throughout the year from addition and subtraction, to fractions and money!

Thursday involved an afternoon of science in which the children investigated magnet! Through some explorative play, children learnt some new vocabulary; force, magnetic, repel, attract, magnetism.

We ended the week with music, adding actions to songs to help us learn the lyrics!

My magic memory of the week was writing my newspaper article all about the earthquake on Gongshan. (Maison)

Joke of the Week! – What opens up a banana? A mon-key!

In maths this week we have been learning how to order, add and subtract fractions and the children have been really applying a growth mindset to conquer their challenges!

In English we have been busy writing newspaper reports based on an earthquake in which the children have used our 5W’s and direct speech fantastically!

We enjoyed double science this week learning more about sun safety and shadows.

The children made us all so proud on Thursday during Potted Sports. As Key Stage 2, we always hope that the children will step up and act as role models for the younger children during Potted Sports and that they did! What excellent ‘Verwood Firsters’, demonstrating all of our core values – respect, responsibility, reciprocity, not to mention joy, patience...the list goes on! We look forward to the Key Stage 2 sports day on Wednesday 28th June!

On Friday, we enjoyed a coronation celebration fit for a king! The children made flags, sparkling crowns and took part in a royally great quiz! To top of the day, the children waved their flags high as they sang our coronation songs beautifully in front of a huge crowd!

We ended the week with a great science lesson! We learnt all about the different parts of the flower and the roles they play in pollination and seed dispersal. We dissected a daffodil so that we could see the different parts with our own eyes! The children working extremely reciprocally with a learning partner and they all took great care. Great job!

My magic memory of the week was learning about free verse poems (especially when we listened to Michael Rosen!) (Eddie)

Joke of the Week! – Why did the phone need glasses? It lost all of its contacts!

We started the week with our immersion morning on our new topic ‘Nurturing Nature’ in which the children learnt about our upcoming learning across all subjects this half term. And designed a topic page. We also learnt more about our ‘R’ this term: reciprocity having a go at a cup stacking challenge and how we can apply this knowledge within the class. The coaches from AFC Bournemouth also showed us the importance of reciprocity in our workshop on Friday where our team skills were put to the test!

In English we began our new text ‘The Tin Forest’ and have been buys enjoying the story as well as recognising features of non-chronological reports such as subtitles. The children also enjoyed some time designing their subtitles for their own non-chronological report based on the rainforest and used the ICT suite to research their facts.

Within Maths we will continue to learn more about length and have been looking at units of measurement, recognising and converting Cm and Mm.

Within Science the children enjoyed learning about the role of plants including the flower, roots, stem and leaves annotating their own diagrams.

This half-term, we have been focusing on the 3s, 4s and 8s timetables, as well as reviewing our 2s, 5s and 10s. Keep up the great work Willow!! Any practice at home really does make a difference!

The children have been building their resilience and stamina in writing and have each finished the half-term with an amazing story based on The Iron Man.

In our non-core subjects, we have learnt all about trade routes and continents, how to sketch lightly with a pencil, the life of Mary Anning to name just a few!

In literacy the children have been drafting their own versions of our class text; Iron Man, getting really creative and emulating the style of the author in their work. We have been really impressed with the children’s writing stamina and their use of sparkly adjectives and adverbs!

For Maths this week we have been consolidating our learning on multiplication and division, working on some one and two step word problems too.

In geography the children learnt about how countries trade with one another, finding out what we import and export in the UK and other countries.

We finished off our week enjoying some music using unpitched percussion instruments and the children did some outdoor RE.

Our topic for this half-term is Rocks and Fossils. It has been lovely to witness the children already bringing their own interests and experiences to their learning.

We had a great immersion day learning all about local hero Mary Anning and her important role in palaeontology and the fossil world. In the afternoon, we focused on our new R for the half-term – reflection. We focused specifically on revising.

In literacy, we have started our learning based on ‘The Pebble in my Pocket’ by Meredith Hooper. As the term continues, we will learn all about the journey of a pebble.

In maths, we have started learning all about the 3 times table. We will continue to review this over the term.

In Literacy, we have been unpicking all of the elements that we need to improve our diary writing. We have looked at chronological order, adverbs and time conjunctions. The children will then be using these to wow us with their diary writing next week.

In Maths, we have been using bar models to support us in solving addition and subtraction word problems.

A definite highlight of the week has been weaving in Art. The children explored the work of Anni Albers, then created their own woven piece of art.  There are some natural weavers in Willow! Let’s see if the children can apply this new found skill to the fence building at the Ancient Technology Centre next week!

In maths this week we have been building on our knowledge of column subtraction and have been learning how to recognise other words for subtraction as well as how to complete column subtraction with renaming.

In PE we have been practicing ball skills, learning all about possession and interception and we also begun gymnastics learning about point and patch balances performing sequences.

Throughout the week we have been putting this term’s ‘R’ into practice, modelling resilience and knowing how we don’t have to give up when things are tricky. “We can’t do it….YET!”

In literacy this week the children planned a Stig of the Dump style chapter based on the novel, planning, editing and writing about their characters that woke up in the Stone Age! Willow base definitely has some authors-in-the-making!

For Maths this week Willow children showed great resilience in their learning when adding 3-digit numbers, using the column method as well as a range of other strategies to tackle some tricky problems.

In Science this week the children built on their knowledge of animal diets and learnt about carnivores, herbivores and omnivores, comparing human and animal diets.

Throughout the week we have enjoyed lots of story time, learning about Black History heroes, our wonderful Harvest Festival, recapping our Stone Age knowledge in History and learning all about crescendos in music. We also had some special visitors (AFC Bournemouth’s coaches) delivering a PSHE workshop in which the children learnt about racism on and off the pitch.

In Literacy, we have started reading Stig of the Dump. The children have loved learning all about Stig’s home and how different it is ours. They have been recapping adjectives, making predictions and looking at character feelings.

In Maths, we have started our Maths No Problem learning. The children are already mastering counting in 100s all the way to 1000!

The children have also enjoyed painting the Creation Story in RE, drawing simple figures in Art and identifying animal skeletons in Science!

What a super week!

We have started to learn all about our new topic ‘The Stone Age’ and the children have enjoyed learning all about the different types of houses throughout the Stone Age period.

In Literacy, we have been focussing our learning on the book ‘Stone Age Boy’ and the children have been making inferences based on the characters and their feelings. 

In Maths, we have been reviewing Place Value, applying what we learnt in Beech Base.

I have enjoyed reading Giraffe, Pelly and Me. It’s about a boy called Billy, a giraffe, a pelican and a monkey clean windows! (Amelia)

I had to be resilient this week when we were learning about right angles in Maths. At first, I didn’t know how to use my right-angle tester, but then I got it! (Olivia)

This week I have done good listening and been very good. (Ivy)

At home, I made my own Scratch account which we have been learning about in school in ICT. It’s amazing! (William C)

I enjoyed using Scratch too, I made three different aliens, R for Robot, G for Ghost and S Slime! (Renato)

Last week I showed patience when I was waiting to have my turn in Potted Sports. (Darcie)

When I was using Scratch I was trying to get the right sound to play at the exact same time the character moved, and it didn’t work out right to start with. I had to keep trying until I did it! (Olivia)
