Maths Curriculum Statement

Our maths curriculum is designed to give every child a strong and confident start in mathematics. We focus on building fluency, deep understanding, and strong reasoning skills.

We follow a mastery approach, which means children explore concepts in depth and move forward in small, carefully sequenced steps. Pupils only progress when they are secure in their understanding, ensuring no gaps are left behind. We support learning by using the Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract (CPA) approach:

  • Concrete – using practical resources and manipulatives to explore concepts

  • Pictorial – representing ideas through drawings and visual models

  • Abstract – applying understanding to numbers and written methods

This approach helps children build secure understanding and confidence across all areas of maths. We use the National Curriculum and White Rose Education schemes of learning, as a resource to support the teaching of mathematics.

Our key goals include

  • Developing fluency in number facts

  • Securing strong understanding of place value

  • Solving problems using all four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division)

  • Building resilience and logical thinking skills

  • Using precise mathematical language confidently

  • Applying maths to real-life situations

Above all, we aim to foster enjoyment, curiosity, and confidence in mathematics.
